Reading in Reception

Reading in Reception

We strive to foster a love of reading and books.  Children choose their own reading books from a wide assortment of schemes and picture books.  We use the Book Banding System where books are colour coded according to ability.

All children receive a reading diary where parents and staff can make comments.  Each child will also be given reading targets to work on at school and home.  These will be attached to the reading diaries. Pink stickers show the child has achieved their target and green show they are working towards it.

In school your child will be read with individually and in small groups (Guided Reading) weekly.

In Reception class reading daily with your child is essential and is their ‘homework.’  Please can we remind all parents to do this and to sign every day in their reading diaries so we can change their books regularly. Your support is needed to help your child progress well. For those parents that use after school or breakfast club a box of books will be made available there so you can help your child to change books if they have not been changed. Please choose the same colour book.

Tricky words

Your child will receive a small envelope of ‘tricky’ words when they are ready.  These are words that cannot be sounded out phonetically and just need to be remembered.  Please practice them daily with your child when you read with them and keep them in their reading folder so we can do so to in school. If your child is confident reading each word and you would like more added, please take them out of the folder and put them in the reading box so we can do this. You can also practice writing them at home and look out for these words in their reading books or in writing you see when out and about.

Support for parents

We hold a reading workshop in the first term of school to help parents and carers support their children to read.  If you are looking for more help or ideas please feel free to come in and talk to a member of staff.  you may also find these websites useful:

Library time

Please take advantage of the wide variety of books we have and support your child to become a great reader and lifelong lover of books.

You can choose library books with your children. You may keep for a book for a long or short period of time and change whenever they are finished. We hope this will give you lots of flexibility and give you a chance to enjoy as many books as you wish.

There will be a basket of library books in the entrance to choose from before or after school. Please choose from these and put back your returned book. Please sign books in and out.  If your child has any particular interests, let a member of staff know and we will try to find books to support this.

  1. Find a book you would like.
  2. Find your child’s class folder.
  3. Find your child’s name.
  4. Write the title of the book chosen
  5. Sign the book back in when you return it.
