National Curriculum

Our aim is to maintain the individuality and encourage the potential of each child in all possible areas of school life. We aim to involve each child fully in their own learning through our use of active learning strategies, assessment and target setting in order to enable them to make maximum progress.

We enable our children to develop mathematical thinking, to become readers and lovers of good books, to learn techniques and strategies to acquire scientific, geographical and historical methods of working, and to fully appreciate a variety of creative and physical aspects of learning.

We value practical investigation and first hand experience. We consider that respect for a child's achievements is extremely important, and a high level of presentation and display of work is expected, both for and by the children.

We cover the National Curriculum as prescribed by the Government but continually seek for ways of introducing excitement and interest through theme weeks eg an International Week, a Creative Arts week, an Environment week or a Book Week. During these themed weeks, activities will be planned through which children will be able to practise the skills they have already learned. The Nursery and Reception children follow the Foundation Stage curriculum, providing purposeful play and exploratory activity both indoors and outdoors.

The subjects included in the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2 are:

Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Design and Technology (D&T), History, Geography, Art, Music and Physical Education.

At each Key Stage, Programmes of Study set out what pupils should be taught, and attainment targets set out the expected standards of performance. The curriculum is delivered in a variety of ways. Using the Programmes of Study, individual teachers will adopt a variety of approaches, including whole-class work, group, individual work and, as appropriate, inter-year work. Whole-School curriculum planning, individual teacher planning and the overview of subject co-ordinators ensures a whole-school approach to curriculum organisation under the general direction of the Head Teacher. Thereby we ensure breadth and balance within the delivery of our school curriculum. Cross-curriculum themes are carefully selected to ensure that each child experiences the appropriate range of Attainment Targets in each Key Stage.
